If by former soviet states you mean Poland you’re not 100% right. The government may be doing things EU doesn’t like but the word “social” over here is stronger than ever with rapidly growing welfare and help for low income families. So it’s even more ridiculous that a supposedly an ethically-right but economically-far-left government is in power and EU doesn’t like it.
